Yoga for Seniors
Yoga is for everyone — at every stage of life and for every body. At Marrickville Yoga Centre, our Seniors classes are designed to make yoga accessible, supportive, and appropriate for older bodies.
Our teachers adapt classical yoga poses so each student can work safely and effectively at their own level. Classes use props and supports, and are guided with clear instruction.
Each session helps students build strength, mobility, balance, and confidence in their body.
Our active yoga practice for older adults builds strength with care, helping maintain a body that feels steady, capable, and confident.
We have been teaching Seniors yoga for over three years, and it has grown into a warm, supportive, and dedicated community of practitioners. You are very welcome to join us.

The Benefits of Seniors Yoga
Yoga is not just about flexibility, nor is it only for flexible bodies. Yoga is truly for everyone, and as we age, around 2–3 hours per week of training focused on balance, mobility, strength, and coordination becomes especially important. These are exactly the areas we work on in our Seniors classes, all of which support living well and preventing falls.
Building muscle strength through active yoga helps maintain and rebuild strength, particularly in the legs, core, and back — the muscles that support stability, steadiness, and independence.
Active movement helps maintain bone density plus strength in the feet, ankles, legs, and hips improves balance and reaction time.
There are also mental and nervous system benefits to doing yoga regularly. Yoga supports alertness, coordination, and confidence in movement while reducing stress and improving your mental well being.

What to Expect in Class
A welcoming group of practitioners and experienced teachers ready to guide and support you throughout the class.
There is no need to bring any equipment or a yoga mat — we have everything you will need at the studio. Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely, such as activewear.
No prior yoga experience is required, and you are welcome to join at any time.
Most people in these classes are working with something in their body. However, if you have a chronic illness, a recent injury, or more complex health concerns, this class may not be the most suitable. In this case, we recommend our Yoga Therapy – Personal class on Fridays at 10am, where we can support you one-on-one.
Our studio is up a single flight of stairs that opens into a large, light-filled space with bathrooms and an amazing fish tank with a turtle called Diamond.

How Yoga Supports You as You Age
Yoga offers a wide range of benefits for seniors, supporting both physical health and overall wellbeing. Regular practice helps build and maintain strength, improve balance, and increase mobility — all essential for moving confidently and reducing the risk of falls.
Seniors yoga also supports joint health, posture, and coordination, making everyday activities like walking, climbing stairs, and getting up and down easier and more comfortable.
Beyond the physical, yoga can improve focus, breathing, and energy levels, while fostering a sense of calm and confidence in the body.
Practising together in a class also creates connection and community. A couple of times a year our seniors get together for dinner or a celebration and are always off for coffee after class.
