Our Connection to Papua New Guinea
Two Generations of Sisters: Why Papua New Guinea is part of Marrickville Yoga Centre
Papua New Guinea has always been part of Hasu’s family story.
Hasu’s mum, Mary, was born in PNG, one of twelve siblings. She moved to Sydney to raise her family but remained deeply connected to her family and home, particularly her sister Susie.
In 2024, Hasu and her sister Mickey travelled to their mum’s village. It was an eye-opening trip. They were reminded of the strength of their family and their deep connection to the land, while also gaining a greater understanding of some of the challenges faced by the women in the community.
The women have incredible skills, making beautiful bilums and kites using traditional techniques. Hasu and Mickey wanted to create opportunities for them to share these skills, earn an income and build greater independence.
Susa Haus grew from this simple idea
With the incredible support of the MYC community, the project has grown in ways they could never have imagined. Sales of the beautiful bilums and kites have helped fund rainwater tanks in the village, with more planned. Access to clean water makes a practical difference to everyday life, supporting hygiene, health and safe drinking water.
The next goal is to help establish a safe house where women can gather, make and sell their bilums and kites in a safe and supportive environment.

A Yoga Retreat In PNG
In July 2026, Hasu took Simon to Papua New Guinea for the first time to explore the possibility of a yoga retreat in 2027.
It’s something they have talked about for many years, and this visit finally made it feel like the timing was right. After spending time in PNG together, meeting family and exploring what might be possible, they are now looking forward to bringing the MYC community to PNG for a retreat in 2027.

Come see the kites at Scratch Art Space
17–27 September
Just up the road from the yoga studio at 67 Sydenham Road, the kites and bilums will be taking over Scratch Art Space for two weekends.
Open Thursday to Sunday, 11am–5pm, come along to see the latest kites and beautiful bilums from PNG. And if you find something you love, you can take it home with you — while supporting the women who make them.
