MARRICKVILLE YOGA NEWSLETTER

APRIL 2015

“It is through your body that you realize you are a spark of divinity.”

B.K.S. Iyengar

This month Hasu is featured in Viparita Karani, supported by the chair.

This variation is a very effective restorative pose. It lengthens and extends the space in the side, ribs, armpit and chest area.

This pose allows more air into the lungs and increases the blood flow throughout the body. Many of you would have come across this pose in the last week of  restorative and pranaya.

Led Practices at MYC

In a led practice, students are given less formal teaching instruction on individual asanas, and asked to work more autonomously than in other classes. This process allows students to learn yoga in a different way: learning to understand and correct themselves without relying on external direction.

For these classes, students need to be experienced enough to work independently, and also have a sound knowledge of appropriate alternative poses for particular situations. For example, during their cycle women should be aware of suitable alternatives for Sirsasana (headstand) and Sarvangasana (shoulderstand). Those working with injuries will also need to know how to safely manage themselves.

The teacher’s job in these classes is to call and maintain a sequence for the group rather than to provide personalised attention to students. The teacher sets the rhythm and pace of a practice, but this is also a time for the teacher to do their own practice.

6am Monday with Simon: Hips and Groins.

7am Saturday with Hasu: In this class, the sequence practised will be based upon the Centre’s weekly focus. For example, standing poses will be practised in standing pose week.

7am Sunday with Simon: Advanced Backbend Variations.

Timetable Changes

Please Note: The Centre will be closed Saturday 1st – Monday 3rd of May as all of our teachers will be attending the Abhijata Iyengar convention in Sydney. We do apologise for this, but this a rare opportunity to study with Abhijata Iyengar in Sydney and is sure to enhance and help further develop the quality and level of teaching at the Centre.

– Robyn will be teaching the 7.15pm beginners class.

– Petra will be teaching the Thursday 6pm General class.

Matina is currently taking leave from teaching at the Centre, so we have made a few changes to the timetable to accommodate this until she returns.

– Tuesday 6am, Wednesday 7.15pm, and Saturday 7am classes will be covered by Hasu.

– Friday 9.30am class will be covered by Simon.

– Tuesday 4.30pm Back Care class is now a General class and will be covered by Sue.

Restorative yogaRestorative with Simon: Monday 4.30-5.30pm

Interestingly, and to our delight, this class has a high male attendance. This is a great class to attend on a regular basis and is also suitable for those that feel they are in need of this type of practice during the week.
“The inversions play a great role in the life of men, in order to keep their mind in a balanced and quiet state. The forward extensions check their aggressiveness, whereas the supine positions give them freedom in their breathing process and cool down the generative organs, resulting in a calming of the mind.“ Geeta Iyengar,

Neck and Shoulders with Hasu: Wednesday 4.30-5.30pm

This class works through different variations on a number of asanas with the emphasis on bringing space and releasing the areas around the neck and shoulders.

What is Iyengar Yoga? Part 2

Iyengar yoga is interested in integration. Although we work with certain parts of the body in certain asanas, the Iyengar method teaches us that all asanas originate in the core of one’s being. Mr Iyengar says “Practice asanas by creating space in the muscles and even the bones of your body. Practice asanas by creating […]
