Open Practice Spotlight: Denise on Friday afternoons.

What do you like about this time?
I like weekday early afternoons as the Centre feels peaceful, in a kind of lull between the morning and evening classes.
What do you normally practise?
I don’t practise a set sequence. Rather, I use the open practices as an opportunity to focus on some ongoing problem areas such as my back and shoulders. I do a combination of asanas that I’ve learned in class and from yoga therapy but I change the asanas and the sequences to what works best for me on the day.
What do you find the difference is for you between coming in and doing an open practice, and coming to a class?
The biggest difference for me is sequencing. Every asana benefits me in some way. However, I’ve learned that some asanas, especially backbends and restorative, work better for me in different combinations and sequences to those practised in class. So I mostly come to open practices in backbend weeks, or if I want to do a more active sequence in restorative weeks. Open practices are also a good alternative to a home practice as I can experiment with the props in a way that isn’t always possible in class.
Do you attend any other Open Practice times at the Centre?
I generally attend open practices on weekday afternoons.
